YouTube’s Major Originality Update: How to Fix Low Shorts Views & Maximize Ad Revenue

Loading article content...

If your YouTube Shorts views have suddenly dropped from tens of thousands of impressions down to a few hundred, you are not alone. YouTube has rolled out its biggest algorithm overhaul of the year: the Shorts Originality & Viewer Satisfaction Update.

This update is specifically engineered to target unoriginal, reposted, and low-effort aggregation content while supercharging distribution for creators who produce unique, high-retention videos. Here is an in-depth breakdown of what changed, why your views may have stalled, and the exact step-by-step strategy to get your Shorts back into the viral feed while maximizing your ad revenue.

1. What Is YouTube's New "Originality System"?

In previous algorithm versions, YouTube Shorts recommendations prioritized raw Viewed vs. Swiped Away ratios and total loops. However, this led to an influx of bot-generated clips, mirrored content from other platforms, and unedited podcast aggregators flooding the Shorts shelf.

Under the new update, YouTube's recommendation engine introduces three critical scoring signals:

Creative Value-Add Detection: If you use third-party footage or clips, the algorithm now scans for substantial transformative elements—such as original voiceover narration, unique facial reaction/commentary, and creative editing. Plain clips without transformative value face automated distribution throttles.

Session Continuation Contribution: Does a viewer stay on YouTube after watching your Short, or do they close the app? Shorts that encourage users to explore more content or visit your channel receive a significant multiplier.

First-Party Audio Priority: Shorts utilizing original creator audio or voice tracks receive higher RPM monetization and better feed reach than clips relying solely on saturated trending audio.

2. The Real Reason Your Shorts Views Plummeted

If you noticed an abrupt drop in your Shorts analytics, inspect your videos for these three common triggers:

Re-used Asset Flags: Uploading TikTok watermarked clips, stock clips used by thousands of other channels, or unmodified podcast cuts triggers an automated "recycled content" penalty.

Weak First-3-Second Hooks: With the viewer satisfaction model, viewers who swipe away within 2.5 seconds now heavily penalize the video's reach score. You must establish tension or intrigue instantly.

Low Completion Velocity: If your 60-second Short only has a 45% average percentage viewed (APV), YouTube stops pushing it to new audiences. Shorter, high-density 20-35 second Shorts with 90%+ APV consistently outperform longer, drawn-out clips.

3. Step-by-Step Blueprint to Fix Your Shorts Views

Step 1: Adopt the "Hook, Twist, Loop" Script Formula

Every successful Short needs a clear narrative structure. Never begin with introductions like "Hey guys, today I am going to show you...". Instead, use an immediate curiosity gap:

Formula: [Bold Claim or Visual Disruption in 0-2s] → [Fast-Paced Value / Core Demonstration in 3-20s] → [Unexpected Twist or Punchline in 21-25s] → [Seamless Audio Loop back to the start]

Step 2: Optimize Your Video Metadata with High-Search Intent

Shorts are no longer just consumed in the infinite scroll feed; YouTube Search is now driving up to 35% of evergreen Shorts views. Ensure your title contains high-CTR keyword phrases and include 3-5 niche hashtags (e.g.
#YouTubeGrowth
,
#ShortsTips
,
#CreatorEconomy
).

Pro Tip: Use the AI Title & Hashtag Generator inside TubeTools Pro to find keywords with low competition and explosive search momentum.

Step 3: Repurpose Long-Form Content the Right Way

If you create long-form YouTube videos, don't just cut raw clips. Use YouTube Studio's Clip to Short feature or edit manually with clean, dynamic subtitles (one-to-three words per frame), sound effects on visual cuts, and an on-screen call-to-action directing viewers to the full video pinned in the description.

4. How to Maximize Shorts Ad Revenue (RPM)

Shorts monetization operates on a pooled revenue model, but you can drastically increase your effective earnings per thousand views (RPM) with these proven strategies:

Target High-eCPM Audiences: Videos in business, finance, tech, software tutorials, and digital tools command an eCPM of $4.00 - $7.00+ in Tier-1 countries (US, UK, Canada) compared to $0.30 - $0.50 in generic comedy niches.

Leverage Pinned Links & Fan Funding: Use the pinned related video feature on every Short to funnel viewers into your monetized long-form videos, where mid-roll ads pay 10x more per view.

Maintain Clean Advertiser-Friendly Content: Avoid aggressive language or sensitive topics in the first 7 seconds of audio to ensure your Shorts maintain the green monetization dollar icon.

While algorithm updates can feel intimidating, YouTube's originality push actually creates an incredible opportunity for serious creators.
